Is it too late for the parents to apply for Medicaid?

Q) I’m a social worker at BCBS. I have a member who was born in February 2034. Was 23 weeks gestation and weighed less than 1000grams. Died 4 weeks after birth. He was never discharged from the hospital. Is it too late for the parents to apply for Medicaid?

A) I’m sorry to hear about the loss of the member. In general, eligibility for Medicaid varies by state and is based on a range of factors, including income and family size. In some states, individuals may be eligible for Medicaid coverage for medical expenses incurred prior to their enrollment, known as retroactive coverage. However, the time period during which retroactive coverage is available can also vary by state.

It may be best for the parents to contact their state Medicaid agency directly to determine their eligibility for coverage and to inquire about any available retroactive coverage. They can also consult with a local social worker or healthcare provider who may be able to provide additional guidance and support.
